It is normal for old laptops to turn off when you pull out the power chord. This is because your battery has stopped working and you need to replace it.

Normally, the decaying of a laptop battery takes place over a span of time and the degradation is visible. You will realize when your battery slowly loses its potential power.

However, if your laptop turns off when unplugged even with a new device, or after replacing an old battery with a new one, the reason might not be that simple.

What to Do When Windows Turns Off When the Power is Unplugged?

This can potentially happen due to two reasons. One is the damaged battery and the second reason is upgrading to Windows 10. There have been many reports of people facing this issue after upgrading their Windows version.

If you face this problem, here are some steps that you can take to solve this.

  1. Change the power management settings on your laptop
  • Go to the Start Menu option
  • Type ‘Power Plan’
  • Click the ‘Edit Power Plan’ option
  • Next, select ‘change advanced power settings
  • Find ‘processor power management
  • Expand the state of the maximum processor
  • Decrease On-battery to 20%
  • Enable the adaptive brightness option
  • Switch on the adaptive brightness for on-battery, as well as plugged-in choices
  1. Reinstall the faulty battery drivers

Faulty drivers can also cause your laptop to shut down. Here is how to solve it.

  • Go to the start menu
  • Open up ‘Device Manager
  • Click ‘Batteries’
  • Select and right-click all the ACPI options and uninstall them
  • Reboot the laptop
  • The battery driver should be installed automatically afterward
  1. Run the in-built Power Troubleshooter

The power troubleshooter hunts the problem and solves it for you. Here is how to run it:

  • Open settings by holding the windows key and I (Win+I)
  • Select ‘Update and Security’
  • Go to the troubleshooting tab
  • Click the ‘Power’ option and click ‘Run the Troubleshooter’
  1. Power reset

A power reset or hard reset of your laptop will reset the settings of the hardware but will not affect any of your personal data. Here is how you can do it:

  • Shut your windows down if it is still open
  • If the windows is not open, then hold the power button and do not let go until there is no power
  • Unplug external accessories that may be connected to the laptop
  • Remove your power cord and the battery from its compartment
  • Press the power icon for around fifteen seconds
  • Stop when you see the power light blinking
  • Now, plug your power cord into the laptop and turn on the system
  1. Disconnecting the Battery

Sometimes, solving this issue is as simple as removing the battery from its compartment, letting it be for a few minutes, and connecting it back. The procedure goes as follows:

  • Shut off the laptop and remove the power cord
  • Locate your battery and disconnect it
  • Let it rest for around fifteen minutes
  • Reconnect the battery
  • Plug in your power cord and turn the system on

Note: You may have to use screwdrivers to open all the necessary screws to get access to the battery. It is recommended that you avoid doing it if you’re not a tech expert because you may seriously damage your device this way.

  1. Update BIOS

Obsolete BIOS can also cause this problem. Obsolete BIOS interrupts the communication between the laptop and the batter. You can solve this problem by following these steps:

  • Open the Run window by holding the windows key + R
  • Type in ‘msinfo32’ and press Enter
  • Check out the data information on the pane towards the right side of the window of System Information. Note it down.
  • If it is not the latest version, update BIOS by following instructions that you can find on the support website
  1. Get a new battery

If nothing is helping, it is time to get a new battery. Even if your battery is new, it might be faulty.
